Mahatsap vizaka sy malahelo ity herin andro ity aho

Well my dear friends and family... Hi haha.  I'm not going to lie... Today has been a very, very frustrating day... I feel like it's been a bit of a waste but!  I did buy my first souvenir a nice tablecloth and elder rakotonjanahary did recieve his patriarichal blessing today, so that's pretty awesome.  Anyways this week.. Man I don't know how to describe it, it was good, it was hard, i was homesick quite a bit, ahah but hey you just gotta keep pushing forward right?  Marina!  Well let's see to start things off i had American interaction everyday but Sunday so that was pretty dang mahafinaritra.  Tue we had interviews with president and that was great.. He is an awesome guy and he told me i'm in the situation i'm in because he trusts me and knows i have potential!  Wed we had a zone conference, well it was just for the new missionaries.  We learned some fun stuff!  There are some new dress code changes!  We can now wear lighter pants and suits and.... no backpacks!  Just shoulder, messenger bags!  HAHA!  Yeah.. A bit peeved but it's fine i'm over it.  We don't need to make the switch yet and i have my eye on a sweet shoulder bag in 67HA.  Also we heard this amazing talk by Brad Wilcox!  It's called "His grace is sufficient"  look it up! REALLy good!  On Thur we had a zone meeting and I met all the guys in my zone, they're pretty sweet.  Friday I went on a split with my zone leader Elder Worthen.. he goes home in like two weeks haha.  It was good.  He's a good missionary and I learned alot.  He told me that its okay that i'm not loving everything right now and it does take a while to learn stuff.  One thing that did stink is we talked about home a lot since he's going home soon and it made me really homesick... so that wasn't fun!  Also I stepped in my first mudpile!  My left foot was covered in mud up to my ankle!  There's a first time for everything right?  Haha it's fine.  Anyways it was good I mean yeah.  Good.  Well that night I talked with him, Elder Bates and Elder Spear who are in that house and it was great.  elder bates has been in country 5 months and he seems to be doing great!  He says to just keep pushing forward and it willl go by fast!  THey said that next morning we were going to this cool gym but we had to go early... So we wake up at like 5 and take a taxi, this guy then leads us to a church and for some reason we're listening to some church service and I was super confused ubt i was exhausted so i didn't care and just went with it.  We walk out and all the sudden i hear this child screaming at the top of his lungs and his parents bring him out as we walk into this room... Then i realized what was going on... I was going to my first Malagasy CIRCUMCISSION cerimony!  Yup!  You heard right!!  I saw a little 2 year old black kid get circumcised!  HA!  It was horrifying but it's a big deal in madagascar and the other elders investigaotr invited them to do it.. .so we came along hha.  So yeah that happened.  Gotta love Madagascar!  Also this week I got my first malagasy haircut.. Haha first of all they freakign cut me pretty good haha and yeah it kind of looks like some military cut... Yolo.  Saturday we went to some concert that some RM chick was holding and we got 4 investigators to come with us!  Granted 3 of them left halfway through but hey!  They still came haha.  But it was good, I tlaked to some elders after haha i love speaking real english to people!  Yesterday was actually really good.. It felt slow but we taught 7 times.. gratned some were just spiritual thoughts but it happened.  somethign dope happened though!  so theres this man named Huga and he's been inactive for a while, but he's an RM also so we visited him and last week we taught his non member wife the first lesson.  It went horrid cause there was some drunk friend of theirs just bible bashing the whole time.  Anyways they took us to dinner after and he speaks pretty good english.  I kid you not he said " I dont know if this will be okay for you're stomach but it's real good malagasy food!"  Haha so yeah i ate at my first totally sketch hotely... It was great!  Anyways sunday he comes up to me after chuch and he says VAZA!  Get over here... I was like uhh.. Anywyas i walk over and his wife asks us to come over!  so that was cool!  She left and he all he sudden like bore his heart to me.  He talked aobut how his wife really likes us, and wants us to keep teaching, he wants us to baptize her and the rest of her family too!  He said how he also is going ot become active again and how he wants to get back to the temple!  I guess he used to be like a branch president and everything with a different wife but something happened and he's been inactive for the past 5 years!  BUT he wants to get activE!  He was telling me this!  (english haha) but yeah!  So we're going to focus on helping him!!  I just thought it was pretty cool that he trusted me enought to talk to me about all that.  We went over after and we were just talking to his wife and her two daughters and before i know it i'm teaching htem about the temple!  So it was great!  So yeah.... Man it's been difficult this week.  Not going to lie.  I've bee nrealy homesick and attimes have had a hard time staying upbeat and remembering why i'm here.  But.  I'm here for a reason and just got to keep pushing forward.  Love you guys.  Oh and a shout out to Bryce's mom for emailing haha.  She said she read the blog and thought she'd email me haha.  Nice.  Anywyas keep the emails coming!  Also I want Elder Costello's email and a picture of my mission plaque!! Love you guys soo dang much, tell max and elli and sade hi and i love them and tell max to try super hard in football haha.  Keep praying!  Peace, love blessings.  fiadanana, fitiavana, fitahiana.

#thegrind

ubject: #thegrind
Haha as nareo (y'all) can see this week has just been #thegrind. One might ask.. oh well why is it #thegrind? Well my dear friends it is #thegrind because it's just been a solid week here in tanjombato. Not a bad week, not a spectacular week. just a normal week in madagascar.. WE started the week with not teaching on monday and having the people who we usually teachon monday nights say they can't on mondays any more and it will have to be tuesdays.. which is fine but now we don't have anything to dotonight haha... my comps fault! he's the trainer!  Anywyas the work... It's been a bit tough this week but good.  It's been tough because a lot of people have been 1. going on vacation, where they leave to go to province for like a month. 2. not been home. 3. just kind of given up on us.  so tha'ts been a bit frustraing but hey.. it's fine.  This week i feel like we arethe word of wisdom missionaries... we taught it like 4 times and 3 of the times the people agreed to quit!  Fingers crossed! haha On tuesday i found a quote that i absolutely love by Henry Ford.  It says "if you think you can, or think you can't, you're right!"  I love that!  Well m ydear friends!  I think I CAN do this whole Madagascar and Malagasy thing!  ANd that attitude has carried with me throughout the week and i've kept a super good attitutde!  I've realized that yeah... sometimes i want to just cuss out my comp in english becasue i'm pretty sure he is in malagasy... and sometimes i wnat to kill a small child... but hey the lord is testing me and i should be thankful for that because it's making me a better missionary and a better person!  THa'ts something i've really realized this week.  I have actually learned a lot and grown alot these past 7 weeks.  Yeah my comp is hard and I hate having the two man house but i'll be real with you gusy.  I wouldn't change it!  I've learned to grow and stretch in many different ways!  For the good!  So yeah!  Tkae that!  Okay so a highlight of my week this week was... I madea  kid cry!  Now one might say that oh! THats horrible!  But it's totalyy okay in madagascar and even a little bit welcomed!  so... we were heading to a soiree with some members and this little kid was being annoying as H and just woldn't stop calling me vaza and followed me around for like 5 minutes.... Dude even had a nasty unibrow!  So i had finally had enough and so I pick him up, put him on my shoulder adn said "mandeha any amerika isika!" We're going to america!  I then fireman carried him for about 20 seconds before he started screameing and crying.. everybody around me was laughing, his brother and dad were laughing, i was laughing and the little snot was bawling his eyes out.. I might be a horrid person but I loved every second of it!  Well... shoot!  We commited one of my favorite investigatosr to baptism for next month becasue he's finally vita soratra!  So that was aweseom!  I'm super excited for the futur!  WEhave two people getting baptized saturday and hoefully 3 next month!  Maybe i'll get my first baptism!  Woo!!  Saturday we did a big service project with some other missionaries and all the yoth in our stake and it was super fun. We, the missionaries went to the other missionaires hosue and made pizza, talked, gossiped and had a grand time! Last niht we also went back, kind of breaking the ruels andhad a my comp year mark, my 3 month mark, elder smithsons year in country mark, etc party with this lady called mama-be.  SHe is insane. sHe's so funny, so pushy, makesthe best food, I had a great time. Well! I'm sorry this is so short but I love you all sooooo much!  Until next time! MAzotoa!

July 29 2013

July 29
So yeah last week I was kind of depressing haha I'm sorry... Anyways!  So this week I had the chance to teach the lesson in District meeting... and I decided to teach about Hope!  Which is my new favorite christlike quality!  So!  Hope.. So important!  I read a lot of conference talks because we have a lot of liahonas in our apartment and it gets lonely... So I found two talks this week that are just so cash money I can't take it.  The first which relates to hope is called "beautiful mornings" and it's from this last conference.  It talks about how life is all about your outlook.  As long as you wake up thinking oh what a beautiful morning, oh what a beautiful day.. You can have a beautiful day!  Life is all about the way you look at it!  now... It's freaking hard!  haha i can talk the talk but i must walk the walk!  The other talk is "of regrets and resolutions" by elder uchtdorf and ohhh i read it yesterday and it was just what i needed after a hard day!  He talked about finding happiness!  He said don't look at things in retrospect because you'll get to a point and you're like... wait.. It's over?!  He said find happiness in what you're doing no matter the circumstance!  That's something i'm going to really try to do!  Also Alma 26:35... #perf haha look it up!  So yeah hope... It's awesome!  You must have faith if you want to have hope... ANd if you wnat something to happen you must have hope!!  The coolest thing i realized is yeah... This is sarotra be!  really hard.  But guess what.. I'm bringing people the hope of the gospel.. I'm planting that seed!  Hah so yeah that's fun.  now.  Some business!  Happy anniversery to mom and dad this week!!  You people are great and i love you!  Second... If aunt kim is reading this... I love the daily quotes so much!  I read one every day!  I'm like halfway through and i'm already scared i'm going to run out!  Thank you so much.  I love you also :)  Now tuesday... We had a split because we had a baptisimal interview for this man named justin!  So it was me and elder dickson in my area!  Yeah that's right I ran the show in my area on tuesday.. Nerveracking but I did it!  I gave a sweeeeeeeet lesson on faharetena hatramin'ny farany (E2E) and dickson said.... That was beautiful haha :)  Also!  I have made it one month in Madagascar!  Haha honestly that first night in my apartment a month seemed very, very veryyyyy far away.  But heck i did it!  Now... Haha a story i must tell you.. we're teaching this old man and his wife and my comp was doing his thing and i was super lost haha so i was kind of paying too much attention to their little baby grandchild... i looked at her and she was playing with scissors!  What?!  AND THEN!  Rusty, sharp, old train track nails... Haha i was dying and the grandma just kept handing her all this crap... I was like... THat child.  Done for haha.  Anwyays!  Haha i'm super short on time so I'm just telling nareo makaskany ny highlights any ny herin androko!  That guy I tlaked about last week we wnet to visit him and his wife and she wasn't there... so he asked if we'd help him!  so yeah for like an hour I worked at a malagasy recycling plant!  HA!  We played bollo ball after... Madagascar is apparently like the world champions at it... i got demolished so I just started come up with as many different ways as I could to throw the ball.  My personal favorite was the John Beck vs Utah 2006 scramble all over the recycling yard... they looked at me like i was crazy but it was my best throw of the day haha!  Anyways!  the highlight of my week was friday!  Because we got to baptize a man named Justin which in malagasy is prounounced dzustin haha.  Anyways his two daughters were baptized in february and we've been working with him and his wife.  We go to them everysunday and monday... on monday athte end they always give us this herbal tea and cookies that are my favorite thing in the world!  I get it tonight! Woot!  Anyways we committed him to baptism my first sunday here but she still isn't ready.  BUt she's super close.  Anywyas.  My first monday lesson with him was that one where I really just felt hte spirit super strong so i really like them cause they always compliment me with my malgasy and i feel pretty close to them.  anwyas so he and his family show up to the baptism like 5 minutes before it's supposed to start and he is wearing the most fly ivory suit ever and he just has the biggest smile.  We do the baptism, Elder Rakotonjanahary did the deed... And he comes out and he just has the bigest smile... He looks up as if to say... Here i go, let's do this thing!  ANd he just kept smiling.  At every baptism the person always bears their testimony he get's up there and just goes off.. He's up there for like 5 minutes and I didn't really know what he was saying but I could feel the spirit so hard!  Haha THEN I swear he was looking at me and he said like i know this church is true and stuff like that and i totally understood it and he was just smiling and i was smiling and i was like.... This man will be the first malagasy general authority hahaha.  But really he has such a strong testimony already and is super smart.  After we were invited to their house for a soiree and we just chillled with him and some other people and man he just looked so dang happy!  Anywyas that made me happy.  We're teachingthem about FHE tonight and i'm really hoping that we can prepare him and his wife Vololona enough to where he can be the one to baptize her!  I really needed that experience cause we taught alot this week but we lost some solid investigators which stunk.  Anywyas for the last item of business y'all will be impressed.  Me and rakoto made sunday dinner saturday night (our new tradition) and it was soooo goood. It was a loka (stuff on top of the rice) that was tomato, onion, potato and beef.  We made it while listening to french rap called sexion dassault (WATI B) and hahah it was soo much fun.. Those congans have some mad talent.  I was cutting the onions and oh my lanta my eyes were watering sooo much haha but it was fun.  anywyas i thought that would make dad proud.  I love you all!! Remember to wake up every morning and think "oh what a beautiful morning, oh what a beautiful day, i've got a beautiful feeling, everything's going my way!"  Because even when life sucks... You ALWAYS have Christ pushing along the road of life with you!  Mazotoa nareo!  Be diligent y'all!
Fitiavana BE!  (much love pronounced feeteeahhvahhnaa bay) :)

July 15 2013

July 15
Well.  From the subject of this email one might question me and say... What ever does this mean.  Well my dear zanaka... I shall tell you.  You see in Madagascar people are kind of a bit silly sometimes and try to take all of your money.  Well Wedensday our power and our water were cut off because apparently we didn't pay the bill... WELL thats a gosh darn lie!  We most definitely did!  Well the church did.  I mean come one... We're the freaking LDS Church!  We're the most trustworthy people on this whole planet!  Haha grr.. So yeah no power or water for me since Wednesday... Yeah... So luckily I was on a split with the DL thursday so I showered Friday morning and Saturday night a the landlady was super nice and gave us a big bucket full of water to wash oursleves with haha.  Saturday... Great Day!  But i felt so nasty so i didn't care.  I used a water bottle and bathed myslef by filling it up and splashing the FREEZING cold water all over my body.. Quite refreshing haha let me tell ya!  SO the second part of the Madagascar experience.  Right now i itch.  SO. BAD.  At first it was just mosquito bites i thought but.. I have come to realize that my bed has fleas hahaha... YES!  haha all over my legs and arms... I'll itch it and i'll be like NOOO it hurts sooo good but i regret it sooo much!  Kay!!!  (pronounced kai) So hopefully today we get our water back so I can 1. wash my sheets and 2. spray my bed with permethrin to get rid of the fleas.  But people.  Don't worry.  It's all part of the journey that is:  MISSION MADAGASCAR!  Haha like the power was out but we've been walking around via candlelight the past couple of nights! so thats cool!  And i wrote in my journal via candlelight!  all i needed was a quill and i would have been kicking it Ben Franklin style!  Haha so yeah... It's been frustrating but.  It's gonna be a great story to tell in a couple of years!  Geez.  You people are so bezesta (good looking) all of your emails just made me sooo faly be!  pronounced fall-y bay and means so happy.  Haha.  Dang it.  I itched my leg again.. kay.  Well where to start.  This week.  Haha it was weird.  it felt super short.  But super long.  And i felt like we didn't do much and times. But we did do alot.  It was just darn confusing!  Well.  My struggle this week has just been my faith in Elder Rakotonjanahary.  It's like there are a lot of things where i'm like... hmm.  That doesnt seem right.  OR hmm. I don't think id do that in that way.  But sometimes I say something and it works out well and other times he is right!  So.  Trust the trainer.  Because he is the TRAINER.  He knows.  haha i'm soo conflicted.  E. Dickson the DL says he thinks that i'll get an american mom in august because he thinks pres adams will have mercy on my soul with this whole malagasy trainer in tanjombato thing.. Which seems great, but i can already tell that i'm learning soo much from Elder Rakoto.  So we'll see.  I don't want to get my hopes up for anythign because it seems like whatever i dont want to happen happens haha.  Oh and just so you know I'm already a legend here in Madagascar.  Because 1.  I am the youngest missionary in Mada and the only 18 year old right now and 2.  I'm being trained in Tanjombato with a malagasy comp.  Tanjombato is great but it is the only area in tana that is just a two man house.. I heard i'lll be here for quite a while though... So.. Yeah. haha.  It's fine.  This week I was delighted to go on a split with my DL Elder Dickson from Washington.  He's been out here like a year and 3 months or something like that.  OH MY LANTA it was soooooooo nice to be able to mosey around Madagscar and 1. have a normal conversation about LIFE!  and 2.  not be the only white guy in a 10 mile radius.  Hah we talked about life... Movies, girls-mainly him talking about his girl courtney who sounds like a huge headache... She's broken up and then came back twice to him... WHile he's been in Madagscar hah.  But most importantly we talked about the mission.  It was super nice to get advice about the mission that related to me!  An American.  I found out that it is completely okay to not be lovign it right now haha. One thing about Elder Dickson is that he is a bit pessimistic.  I feel like he is more just enduring his mission.  I wantto be an elder that loved my mission and didn't just endure it.  so thats a goal of mine. haha.  One thing ive done is ive kept a daily tender mercies notebook.  It's just a pocket notebook and i write the great things that happened in that day.  I'm happy to tell you all that i've done it everyday since my first sunday here and the list each day seems to get bigger and bigger each day!  Always just rememberthe little things people.  Haha man... 2 months... I have done 1/12 of my mission!  woot.  haha.  Man.  Crazy!  Shoot all of your emails made me soo happy today!  ESPECIALLY the email from the one and only jacob neuenswander.  :) hehe.  First one!  He's a good guy.  And i got an email from my buddy zach!  Crazy thing!  I wrote in my planner...  Get zach and some other BYU guys emails.. Amazingly... He emailed me and sent a massive group email to all the guys i wanted to email! HAA!  church is true!  Marina ny fiangonana!  Fun Fact:  I saw a man slaughter an omby (cow) this week!  then today i saw another guy peeling flesh off an omby head... #madagscar haha.  So.  With the power and water being out this week i've eaten/made creative things.  Last night at a members house we had rice and loka but the loka was chicken, peas and tomato... so. good.  MMM.  Then we've eaten out a lot this week haha . We went to this Hotely called snack tigro by our apt like 3 times in 3 days hahah.  So yeah.  Malagasy food is pretty dang good.. and i went through a whole can of peanut butter haha... Oh by the way.  NO KNIVES here.  We eat with a fork and a spoon... You cut meat with the spoon!  I'm startingto get a hang of it!  So.. This week.  I was a misionary ahha.  Obviously.  But.  Get ready to be wowed.  So.  theres this man named Anissy.  and he's been taught for a while... And nobody has baptized him because he wants PROOF ofthe bookof mormon.  Hah well obviously i cnat give him proof.  Only the holy ghost.  so i studied a lot about the book of mormon and we went into it!  Funny thing was before the lesson we were contacting and these ladies were beign soooo freakign rude and disrespectful.  They kept trying to speak french to me and i'd say "tsy miteny francais aho"  I don't speak french.  They'd laugh so finally i said Avy any America!  And I'm an american!  Then they were like oooh hhh hiiii!  Like think of stitch from lilo and stich saying hi... and it sounded like that hah.  so yeah they kept saying all this stuff in malgasy like vaza and fat and all this mean stuff!  And i was pissed.  so were going to teach anissy and i was like. hey. i shouldn't be mad.  so i said a quick prayer and put on a happy face.  well the lesson went pretty well.  He seemed okay but hten i asked rakoto if i could close it out.  i read to him Mosiah 10:3-5. providing emphasis on real intent and stuff like that.  then i started just testifying.  The words were flowing and i was promising him he could recieve an answer! Now he's a religious man and knows soem stuf about religion and stuff haha.  NAyways i said.  "I haven't been in madagascar very long, i haven't taught you very long, and im not very mahay at malagasy, but (the spirit literally told me to say this) i said.  I love you, and i KNOW this book is true with out a doubt.  Because i love you i promise you if you will pray with real intent and wait for an answer.  You WILL recieve an answer that this book and this church is true through the holy ghost... Then I said with that.   If you recieve your answer.  Will you be baptized on Aug. 10..."  First he started laughing... Then he said.  Wow.  That made COMPLETE sense!!! WHAT!!!!  He said.  I KNOW that the holy ghost is talking through you right now, because i know exactly what you were trying to say.  So YES i will be baptized if i get that answer." AHHHHHHHHHH!!! WHAT?!  POP-POP!!  Haha he siad yes!  Now all i have to do isleave itup to him and the holy ghost.. But dang.  That felt pretty dang cool.  After Rakotonjanahary and i were walking away.  first thing he says... The spirit was soooo good!  haha then... You're malagasy.. It was so clear!  Geez.  Haha the gift of tongues is real.  No i am not fluent, and i still understand like. nobody.  but i testified to anissy through the holy ghost and it made perfect sense. people.  I'm in MadaFREAKINGgascar.  No it is not beautiful and amazing.  BUT.  THere are people here that need the gospel and i get to bring it to them.  I just gotto keep pushing forward with faith and PATIENCE and one day i'll be mahay out of my mind.  Church is true.  Marina ny Fiangonana.  Red white and blue.  Couch crew till i die.  Go Cubs, go cougars, team max, 'merica, for Dartanion, vegan powers, fleas4days, #madagascar.  Mazotoa.  Be diligent.
